Scottsdale Psychologist Provides PTSD Treatment To Veterans
Dr. Sanford J. Silverman from the Center for Attention Deficit and Learning Disorders announced his participation in a national outreach program that provides Neurofeedback training for veterans to treat Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and loss of brain function due to blast injury, concussion or chemical exposure.
Dr. Silverman, a licensed psychologist and board certified Neurofeedback provider, is the only participant operating in the Phoenix metropolitan area, which is home to an estimated 300,000 veterans. According to a RAND Corporation study, 20 percent of Afghanistan and Iraq veterans report symptoms of post-war traumatic stress or major depression.
PTSD is a type of anxiety disorder that occurs after an individual is exposed to a traumatic event. A person suffering from PTSD may exhibit symptoms including recurrent nightmares or flashbacks, irritability or outbursts of anger, loss of interest in activities, depression and substance abuse. Neurofeedback therapy (also known as EEG Biofeedback) helps decrease symptoms of a post traumatic disorder by teaching an individual to change the brain waves associated with control of emotions and impulses. While Neurofeedback has been in practice for decades, its use as a therapy for PTSD has recently gained popularity with the return of thousands of afflicted veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.
"The effects of PTSD on veterans can be lifelong, and they impact the lives of everyone involved, including spouses and children," said Dr. Silverman. "I'm proud to be a part to offer my help to these brave individuals."
